What is Self-Sabotage?
At its core, self-sabotage is sensing that something isn’t right for you - and continuing anyway.
What does it look like?
Self-sabotage often shows up in subtle, everyday ways - negative self-talk, avoidance, overthinking, unhealthy coping habits, or staying in relationships, roles, or jobs that no longer fit. It can look like comfort eating, endless scrolling, procrastination, or repeating behaviors you’ve already promised yourself you’d stop, even when you know they’re working against what you want.
Why does it happen?
Self-sabotage develops as a protective response. Patterns form through stress, repetition, emotional safety needs, conditioning, and learned beliefs. What once helped you cope or survive continues running automatically, even when it no longer serves you. Over time, these behaviors feel normal - not because they’re healthy, but because they’re familiar.
Who is affected?
Self-sabotage doesn’t discriminate. It often affects capable, driven, and self-aware people - those who care deeply, think a lot, and carry responsibility. It shows up most often in individuals who are navigating stress, transition, pressure, or inner conflict, and who sense that something in their life feels off, even if they can’t fully explain why.
If this feels familiar, it’s not because you lack discipline or motivation.
It’s because a pattern has been running in the background.
And the good news is: patterns can be seen, understood, and changed.
